Illustration: a MacBook Pro opens and the view moves in on the notch, where Berth shows CPU 12 % on the left, Codex 68 % and Claude Code 41 % on the right. A click unfolds gauges, the allowance, Now Playing and the next meeting with Join Zoom.

On a MacBook, the notch becomes a readout.

Two readouts sit beside the camera. CPU, memory, battery, AI allowance, Now Playing or your next meeting.

Click it and it unfolds into a small dashboard.

Off by default. Without a notch, a capsule at the top centre.

A profile for each kind of work.

Each profile keeps its own apps, widgets and look.

Native and private

Berth uses public APIs only, the ones Apple offers every Mac app.

Only what a feature needs.

Each permission waits for the feature that needs it. Never at launch, never Full Disk Access.

  • Screen & System Audio Recording: Never asked.
  • Accessibility: Never asked.
  • Calendars: For Calendar and Next Meeting.
  • Reminders: For the Reminders widget.
  • Automation: For Now Playing, Empty Trash and New Window.
  • Notifications: For alerts you turn on.
  • Offline license. Checked on your Mac, never on a server.
  • No account. No telemetry. No analytics or cloud sync either.
  • Reports you read first. Nothing is sent until you press Send.
  • Remove Berth, built in. It lists each step before it starts.
  • Apple’s Dock comes back when Berth quits. After a crash, at Berth’s next launch.
  • Updates when you ask. Berth never checks on its own.

Other docks’ facts are from these pages, checked on 5 October 2026 and 11 October 2026: DockFix (dockfix.app, FAQ, changelog), Dockset (dockset.app, manual), Sidebar (sidebarapp.net, FAQ, changelog, prices; Setapp), CoolDock (cooldock.app; Peerlist; a review on Mause Reviews) and Dockspace (getdockspace.app, blog). Prices are as each page states them. “Not stated”: their pages do not say.

1 DockFix’s site, dockfix.app, says it “requires no special permissions” (5 October 2026). Installed on a Mac, DockFix 5.2.0 declared Screen Recording for window thumbnails, used Accessibility to raise windows and called the private SkyLight and MediaRemote frameworks. Our check: 29 September 2026.

Questions.

Which permissions does Berth ask for?

Calendars, Reminders, Automation or Notifications, and only when you turn on a feature that needs one. When each is asked for

Does anything leave my Mac?

Only features you turn on use the network: Weather (and Apple’s geocoder, for a place you type), Spotify artwork, your own Codex CLI and Check for Updates. Privacy

What happens after the 7-day trial?

Nothing is deleted. Only adding items or profiles needs a license.

How do I uninstall Berth?

Settings → About → Remove Berth… restores Apple’s Dock, removes the login item and deletes your data only if you ask. Then drag Berth to the Trash.

What doesn’t Berth do?

It never asks for Screen Recording or Accessibility, so there are no window previews or other apps’ badges. Now Playing covers Music, Spotify, Swinsian, VLC and QuickTime Player, but not browsers.

Pick a starter dock, or build your own.
